Some people think that universities should require all students to study at least one humanity subject, such as philosophy or literature, while some students who major in science and maths think that there’s no need for them to study these subjects. What do you think?

Task 2

阅读：

学校规定所有学生必须选修一门科学类课程，但因开设的课程数量较少，许多学生无法选上。对此，有理科生在校报上建议，文科生不要选科学类课程，以便给理科生腾出选课名额。

听力中女生不同意这一建议。

她认为，学校应通过雇佣更多老师来增加科学类课程的开设数量，且学校有能力承担这笔费用。此外，她指出文科生学习科学课程同样很有价值，例如她本人作为艺术专业学生，就将生物课上学到的知识运用到了自己的画作中。

Task 3

员工受到正向激励后会产生 “兴高采烈效应”(elation effect)，这种效应能提高工作效率，但并不持久，会逐渐消失。比如，一位图书校对员在获得加薪后，单位时间内校对的书稿页数会增加，发现的错误也会更多，然而一个月之后，其工作效率就会回落到加薪之前的水平。

Professor：In this course, we've been studying current events and discussing the value of being educated consumers of news. However, there is also an opinion that we should periodically limit our exposure to current events and even take breaks from the news. Do you think it isbeneficial to take breaks from reading or watching the news for a period of a few days or weeks? Why or why not?

Claire

Beneficial or not, it would be impossible. Today, we're exposed to the news everywhere on our phones, on our computers, on big TV screens in waiting roomsand in airport lounges. To take a break from the news, you would have to withdraw from all activities in society, which is unrealistic.

Andrew

I think that taking a break from the news could be helpful psychologically. lt obviously depends on how long a break we take. Completely avoiding watching or reading the news may be too extreme, but taking a short break from the news could help us avoid news stories that may affect us negatively.

对立观点:

Claire: 不现实。因为我们现在生活里到处都是新闻，无论是手机、电脑还是机场的电视，几乎无处不在。如果要完全不接触新闻，那就等于把自己从社会中抽离出来，根本不可能。

Andrew: 短暂地远离新闻，其实对心理健康是有帮助的。尤其是现在很多新闻偏负面，会让我们产生焦虑。那如果适当停一停，对我们情绪是有好处的。

支持 Andrew。更容易展开论证，可以从时间管理和注意力资源控制的角度去展开论证。很多同学在生活中也有类似的经验，比如在备考阶段不看新闻，效率更高，情绪也更稳定。

Doctor Gupta：More and more, Automation is a much-discussed topic in economics, one that continues to grow in importance with today's advances in robotics and artificial intelligence(Al). Robots and Al provide powerful ways to replace human labor by doing work better and faster than people can. Automation can have very positive effects on businesses and the broader economy, but there are disadvantages as well. What do you think? ls the use of automation a positive development overall? Why or why not?

Paul：I think the use of automation is a positive development. If Al and robots are used to replace human workers, companies will be able to produce many more products than they do now. They can also lower costs, making those products cheaper for people to buy. As a result, everyone will have access to more affordable products.

Kelly：I worry about the psychological effects on people as Al and robots take over work. I doubt humans will really be happy with ever-greater amounts of leisure time. Many of us derive satisfaction from working and doing our jobs well. In fact, never in human history have we been able to spend large parts of our days labor-free.
